What we can learn from Post-Modern homes

We have under our belt, iconic developments that offer home owners an abundant taste of urban living.

The design intent is to create a stunning architectural intervention on a prominent granite hilltop that integrates itself with the setting while at the same time maximising interaction with the local environment and the infinite vistas across the Indian Ocean.

The ambition was to touch the island as lightly as possible, allowing the reversal of the building at some future time to nature. No excavation was carried out and there are no foundations. Instead the building form is a direct result of the topography and bears directly off solid the rock landscape.

The Podium

The linear structure of the ground floor podium emerges gradually from the natural chaos of the weathered rock landscape. The strong geometric forms are clad in the same rough hewn black granite that supports them so appear as a man made extension of the topography. Large overhangs enhance the feeling of solidity as well as protecting the internal environment from direct sunlight.

Internally the accommodation is arranged around a large open plan gallery that acts as both a living and entertaining space and provides ample opportunities for displaying the Owner’s carefully curated art collection. Part of the rocky landscape pierces through the floor, dividing the space and providing a natural sculpture to compliment and contrast with the man-made art collection.

At the front of the central living space huge Schueco sliding glazed doors open up onto a large terrace with a vast semi-circular infinity pool offering panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and the neighbouring islands. To the sides of the gallery space central pivoting fan doors open up to provide cross-ventilation and access to a beautiful orchid and rock pool garden.

At the rear of the podium three split-level guest bedroom suites fan out providing incredible framed vitas of a verdant forest valley with glimpses of the sea beyond. All of the bedrooms have their own art and furniture collections as well as external bathrooms on the balconies. Huge angled walls frame the views and provide complete privacy.
